Ellen Anna (Haije) Baldwin, 77, of Marlborough passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at home peacefully surrounded by her family.
Ellen was born on September 2, 1947, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She was the third child born to two physicians: Herman Mari Haije and Anna Hermina (Merkuur) Haije.
She graduated with high honors from the prestigious Barlaeus Academy in Amsterdam. She then went on to medical school, where she joined a sorority whose several members have remained her friends until today. At age 17 she left medical school to start four shops in Amsterdam with her older sister Pien. They designed and made avant-garde dresses and other fashionable wear for young women for about ten years.
She spent a year in Zurich, Switzerland, with scientist Richard Flavell, whom she later married and had two sons. They moved to near London, England, and later to Sudbury, Massachusetts, in the U.S. She later became a computer programmer before earning her bachelors and masters degrees in Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Part of her education was also at Wellesley College. She taught mathematics on both the high school and college levels before retiring in 2009.
Ellen was an avid gardener who grew vegetables and especially lots of flowers. In past years she had been a recreational tennis player who owned her own court. She was also into portrait painting, as well as knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed traveling and especially liked sitting on lounge chairs at the beach.
She is survived by her second husband, Jeffrey T. Baldwin, her son Robert and his wife Joanne of San Francisco, California, her son Steven and his wife Nicole of Newton, Massachusetts, four grandsons, her older sister Hermina (Pien) Maso and her husband Benjo of Abcoude, The Netherlands, her younger sister Constanza (Connie) and her husband Willem de Mol of Utrecht, The Netherlands, two nieces, and two grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Jan Christian Haije.
Visitation hours will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 from 9:00-11:00 A.M. at Tighe Hamilton Regional Funeral Home, 50 Central Street, Hudson, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 A.M.
