Hudson, MA

Irene S. Chaves passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, surrounded by her loving family. Born on April 19, 1947, on the Island of Santa Maria in the Azores of Portugal, Irene’s journey was marked by dedication, resilience, and deep devotion to those she held dear.

Her early years were spent in Santa Maria, where she attended local schools and cultivated the values and skills that would shape her life. In 1968, Irene immigrated to the United States with her mother, initially residing briefly in Hudson, Massachusetts, before returning home to Santa Maria. That same year, she married Antonio R. Chaves in Santa Maria, with whom she settled back in Hudson to build a life together. Their enduring partnership spanned nearly six decades, united by shared love and commitment.

Irene’s professional career was distinguished by her significant contributions to the field of electronics, particularly in the development of microchips. She dedicated many years to the Digital Equipment Company and later Quantum Electronics, where she contributed her expertise until her retirement at the age of 65. Her work reflected a sharp intellect and a persistent drive that mirrored her personal character.

Outside of her career, Irene’s gentle and creative spirit was ever-present. Known for her outstanding knitting and crocheting talents, she lovingly crafted garments and quilts that warmed the hearts and homes of many recipients. Her hobbies extended to cherished moments with her feline companion, “Benfica,” and lively enjoyment of Benfica soccer matches, alongside a steadfast loyalty to the Boston Celtics. True to her nurturing nature, she also delighted in caring for herself, often looking forward to having her nails pampered.

Irene was deeply respected and beloved within her circle of friends and family. Her personality shone through as respectful, loving, caring, and outgoing, with an unwavering passion for her family. She invested wholeheartedly in her relationships, imprinting her strong will and determined spirit upon her children and grandchildren alike. The love and memories she shared with them were the greatest source of pride and joy in her life.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Antonio R. Chaves of Hudson, MA; her daughters Fatima Garrity and her husband William, and Cidalia Chaves, both of Hudson, MA; and her son Tony Chaves and his wife Delia of Clinton, MA. Irene also leaves behind cherished grandchildren Nicholas Garrity, Corey Chaves, and Kailen Chaves, along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will remember her kindness and strength. She was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel Santos and Maria Freitas, as well as her seventeen siblings.
