SHREWSBURY, MA – Mary A. Dupre, 84, died peacefully the morning of February 28, 2023 at
the memory care unit of BSL at Shrewsbury Crossings in Shrewsbury, MA after a long illness.
She had been pre-deceased by her husband of 57 years, Arthur E. Dupre, in July 2016.

Mary Ann graduated from Northbridge High School and met her future husband on a swimming
date at Meadow Pond in the summer of 1956. He was known as “Duke” and would drive his
blue Ford by her house on numerous occasions to inquire about her availability. They were
married on June 27, 1959 at St. Patrick’s Church in Whitinsville with a reception at the Polish
(Sokol) Hall in East Douglas, MA.

Mary Ann worked first as a waitress at the old Friendly’s in the shopping plaza in Whitinsville
before leaving the workforce to become a fulltime mom to her three children. Later, she
returned to work at the News Tribune office on Main St. in Whitinsville for a number of years
before moving with her husband to Marlborough, MA. She worked for Durand Chevrolet in
Hudson and then as a department coordinator at Marlborough Hospital before retiring in 2004.
She was the youngest of 13 children and last remaining family member of Joseph Smith and
Dorothea (Gvosdjak) Smith who had settled in East Douglas after arriving from Slovakia in the
early 1900s.

We will remember our mother Mary Ann for her good humor and kindness. She enjoyed bingo,
golf, tennis, camping on Cape Cod and travelling to Vermont for vacation. She leaves behind
her children, Norman and his wife Suzanne of East Sandwich, MA, David and his wife Donna of
Auburn, MA, and her daughter Karen Digou, wife of the late Chris Digou of South Dennis, MA. Also, several nieces and
nephews of her siblings closest in age.

A graveside service and celebration of life will be held at a future date this spring. Tighe Hamilton Regional Funeral Home, 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749 is honored to be assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Mary Ann to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm in
Methuen, MA. They take in many of the toughest cases of abandoned pets throughout New
England and reflect the fondness our mother had for animals throughout her life.
