Joyce Hallowell (Glynn), 92, passed away on June 9, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of love, vibrant energy, and dedication to her family and community.
Born in March of 1934 and raised in Quincy, Massachusetts, Joyce spent her youth playing the piano at the Methodist Church and attending club dances. Living just one block from the ocean, she developed a lifelong love for the water while sailing with her father—a passion that grew into racing boats as a member of the Squantum Yacht Club. After graduating from the Pierce Secretarial School in Boston, Joyce began her professional career working for Sylvania.
In 1955) Joyce married her beloved husband, Walter, and the couple settled on Reardon Road in Hudson, where they lived for nearly 30 years and raised their two children, Debbie and Johnny. While raising her family, Joyce also served her community as the principal’s secretary at Hudson High School. She and Walter also shared a love for socializing and became active in a local square-dancing club. Joyce’s truest joy lay in being needed; she was a protector and nurturer, selflessly caring for Walter through a long illness and always showing up for her children and many friends.
Following retirement in 1986, Joyce and Walter embraced life as snowbirds. They split their time between Eastham and Sanibel and eventually settled into a condo at Cinnamon Cove in Fort Myers, Florida. Joyce filled her retirement years with intellectual and outdoor passions: she took Lifelong Learning classes, read endlessly, rode her bike, and tended to her garden. An avid birdwatcher, she went on many birding walks and kept a special watch for her favorite resident Carolina Wren. Joyce also gave back generously, volunteering her time at Mass Audubon in Wellfleet and Lee Health Hospital in Fort Myers. Joyce and Walter dearly loved their three grandchildren Emily, Peter and Daniel with whom they spent many wonderful vacations and holidays.
Following Walter's passing in 1999, Joyce found love again and married a dear family friend, Burt Hallowell. Together, they enjoyed traveling across Europe and collaborated on meaningful philanthropic work, awarding and distributing grants to New England colleges until Bert’s passing in 2006.
Joyce was blessed with an active, joyful social life in Florida, where she attended and hosted frequent game nights and soirées. Her warm spirit and quick wit earned her a large circle of friends, including a close-knit group from New York who affectionately named her an "honorary New York resident." She will be deeply missed by her family, her friends, and all who knew her.
She is survived by her two children Deborah and her husband Mark, John and his wife Melanie and three grandchildren, Emily, Peter and Daniel and great granddaughter Leah.
