Joseph F. Scanlon, Jr., 87, of Hudson, MA, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, January 7, 2019, after a period of declining health. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Sandra A. (Nelson) Scanlon.

Joseph was born in Cambridge, MA, on August 31, 1932, one of four children, of the late Joseph F. and Dorilda (Hebert) Scanlon. He was raised in Cambridge, where he graduated from High School and subsequently enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, serving his Nation during the Korean War from 1951 until 1954. Joseph married the love of his life Sandra Scanlon on January 9, 1960 and together they lived in Winthrop, MA for the first 4 years and later settled in Hudson, MA in 1964, where they have resided for the past 55 years. Joseph had a long and successful career as a Telephone Technician for New England Telephone/Verizon, retiring after 36 years of service.

During his 55 years in Hudson, Joseph was an active member of the community. He was a longtime member of Saint Michael Parish and Hudson-Concord Elks Lodge #959. He was an avid sports fan and coached Hudson Little league and Youth Hockey. He also volunteered at the Hudson Food Pantry, Emerson Hospital and participated in the VA Normative Aging Study. Joseph also enjoyed woodworking, working with his hands, sitting in the sun and spending time with his family and at the ocean.

In addition to his beloved wife, Sandra Scanlon, he was also survived by his 5 children, Matthew J. Scanlon of Watertown, Sean J. Scanlon of Leominster, Michael J. Scanlon and his wife Christine of Lancaster, Timothy J. Scanlon and his wife Anne of Orangevale, CA and Julie S. Curtis and her husband Richard T. (Ret CWO4 U.S Coast Guard) of Lithia, FL; 5 grandchildren, Derek Scanlon, Ariel Smith and her husband Curtis, Sydney Scanlon, Mitchell Scanlon and Joseph M. Scanlon and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Walter Scanlon, Claire Ferrari and Dorothy Pierce.

There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 17, 2020 at 9:00am at Saint Michael Parish, 21 Manning St., Hudson, MA with military honors. A Celebration of Life will be held following the mass at the Hudson-Concord Elks, 99 Park St., Hudson, MA from 11:00am-3:00pm. Burial will be private at a later time.
