Larry "Smitty" Smith

Larry “Smitty” Smith, 89, passed away Monday, January 11, 2021 at BWH. Larry was born and raised in Gloucester, MA the son of the late Clarence C. and Stella (Mello) Smith.  He graduated from Gloucester High School and worked as a fisherman before joining the United States Army Infantry as a mechanic. When he returned home, Larry moved to Hudson and joined the Carpenters Union Local 476, where he worked for 50 years until his retirement. He was a Dance Instructor at Arthor Murray Studio's he was an amazing dancer. Then he married Lulu Smith in 1974 and traveled to Australia, Spain, New Zealand, and Denmark. They would drive their RV to Florida each year staying at the Buttonwood Bay RV park. They were part of Honda Goldwing Motorcycle Club with friends and he loved to go fishing. He loved feeding and watching the birds, squirrels at his home.

Larry was a proud and longtime member of the United Brethren Masonic Lodge in Marlborough, MA, the Hudson-Concord Elks Lodge #959 in Hudson, MA and Amvets in Hudson also the Hudson Portuguese Club where he served as past president.  Everyone in town knows how much “Smitty” loved his garden, his tomato plants and giving away what he grew to all his friends even offering to deliver it.  All who knew “Smitty” will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lulu R. (Bidstrup) Smith of Hudson; his daughters: Fay Richardson of Marlborough, MA and Lori Godfrey and her husband Michael of Ohio; his sons: David Smith of Seminole, FL, Barry Smith of Jaffrey, NH, Darren Smith and his wife Lisa of Gardner, MA; his sister, Pat Farus of Bensalem, PA; grandchildren: Joseph Richardson and his fiance Maura Mahoney of Sutton, MA and Brianna Richardson and her partner JP Bergamo of Swampscott, MA; Leanne Charland with fiance Joe Davidson Seminole, FL; Sheena Charland several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his dog “Angel” and his cat “Precious.”  He was predeceased by his sons, Leland Charland and John Smith and his siblings: Jerry Smith and Mary “Dolly” Allen.

Services are private.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s memory may be made to either: Hudson Senior Center, 29 Church Street, Hudson, MA 01749 or Save a dog, 604 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776.
