Michael Markou

February 28, 1927 — October 16, 2020

Hudson

Michael Markou, of Hudson, formerly of Natick, passed away Friday, October 16, 2020 after a brief illness. He was the husband of Kathleen Markou of Hudson. Mike was born in Kreshove, Albania, son of the late Pericles and Alexandra (Tasselari) Markou. At the age of 5, he traveled with his mother and sister from Albania to a new life in America, through Ellis Island in New York to Boston, MA. He left Brookline High School to enlist in the US Navy during WWII where he proudly served on the USS Helena CA-75. After the war, Mike returned to Massachusetts and married Eleanor Zissi of Brighton. The young couple began a life in Natick where Mike worked for the Natick Labs as a sign painter and later furthered his career in Graphic Arts and operated several successful printing and sign painting businesses. His skill was well known in the area, especially his talent for gold leaf signs and free hand sign lettering. His printing and sign shops served countless businesses and individuals over many years. In retirement, Mike developed an envelope system publicizing the search for lost/abducted children. Using his Photo ID envelope system, Mike worked with local and national organizations in the recovery of missing children. His system was part of a nationwide effort that led to the location of two abducted children which was later profiled on the show "48 Hours." In 2000, Mike was finally honored with his high school diploma through "Operation Recognition," a special ceremony attended by then Governor of Massachusetts Paul Cellucci which recognized WWII veterans who left Brookline High School to enter the military before graduation.

Mike was blessed with a loving family and countless friends. Mike was a great listener and enjoyed engaging in conversation with everyone. He was known to tell amazing stories of his past which usually resulted in laughter and endless smiles. He was a lifelong collector of coins, historic memorabilia/photographs and many other collectibles. Mike's zest for life was an inspiration to those who knew him. He was eternally curious and grateful for the blessings in his life. These are just a few of the wonderful qualities that will be sorely missed by Mike's close friends and family.

Mike is survived by his wife Kathleen Markou of Hudson, his son Mike (Mickey) Markou of Milford and his wife Melissa and their daughter Anna, son Peter Markou of Westborough and his wife Cindy and their son Nicholas, sisters Mary Leach of Quincy and Natalie Markou of Quincy. He is predeceased by his first wife Eleanor Markou.   Mike is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
