Robert James Hughes

August 27, 1968 — September 9, 2020

Berlin, MA

Robert "Bob" James Hughes, 52, of Berlin, MA, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 9, 2020.  He was born and raised in Paramus, NJ the loving son of Carl "Bill" W. Sellen and the late Valerie  (DePaola) Sellen.  Bob graduated from Paramus High School and earned his Bachelors Degree from Ramapo College of New Jersey before he moved to Massachusetts to raise a family with his wife and college sweetheart, Dara (Jaretsky) Hughes.

He was an outdoorsman who loved hiking and camping. This passion turned into a 22-year career as a land surveyor. He had been an active member of Berlin’s Lions Club since 2002. The organization’s motto is “We Serve” and its mission is to raise funds for research in finding a cure for blindness. These selfless ideals were a perfect match for Bob, and he enjoyed working on projects and events to support their mission.  He loved music more than life itself. It was important to him from a very young age and he started with playing trumpet in the high school marching band and eventually played guitar. He enjoyed playing and collecting Martin guitars and also played the banjo. He once even built his own guitar.

Robert is survived by wife, Dara (Jaretsky) Hughes; his son, Evan; his father, Carl "Bill" W. Sellen and his sister, Jennifer (Sellen) Chang and her husband Roger; his brother-in-laws: Todd Jaretsky and his wife Rose and  William "Bill" Jaretsky and his wife, Victoria; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  His mother, Valerie Sellen, to whom he shared a special bond, predeceased him.
